Over three months remain for the commencement of the summer transfer window, but Barcelona are already working hard on securing agreements with their targets.

Several reliable reports, including Fabrizio Romano, indicate that Andreas Christensen is set to become the Catalans’ first signing ahead of the 2022-23 season.

According to reports from SPORT, the centre-back’s firm desire to play at Barcelona was the factor that helped push the deal through. Despite his father, who doubles as his agent, pushing for him to sign an extension with Chelsea, Christensen opted to move to Barcelona.

The Danish international is in the final months of his contract at Stamford Bridge. The initial plan from his entourage was to use it to secure a better economic deal at Chelsea. Yet, the player has accepted a lower economic proposal to join Xavi’s setup which he deeply admires.

The 25-year-old has maintained six clean sheets for the Blues in 12 starts. He averages close to three clearances and two interceptions per game, making him one of the Champions League winners’ best defenders.

Christensen is said to have turned down offers from two Premier League clubs out of respect for his current club. Bayern Munich, too, pushed hard for his signature, but the Dane was firm on his desire to join Barcelona.

Under Xavi, he will compete with Gerard Pique and Ronald Araujo for a starting spot in the team. One would expect him to be a long term replacement for the former who is now in the twilight of his career.
