Brazilian defender credits Barcelona for his World Cup call-up

Dani Alves is one of the oldest players participating in the ongoing 2022 FIFA World Cup.
Even at the age of 39, the veteran defender has proven to be an option for Brazil. Although he has featured in only two matches so far, his presence in the side has been critical in helping the South American giants reach the quarterfinal stage of the competition.
In a recent press interaction, Alves has talked about his adventures in the World Cup so far. But most importantly, he has thanked Barcelona for playing a role in helping him remain relevant even at this stage of his career.
“I played for Barça last year and I also trained with Barça’s subsidiary for the last few weeks. Everything that is happening to me is also thanks to them,” Alves said (h/t Barça Buzz).
Widely regarded as one of the most decorated footballers in history, Alves had returned to Barcelona at the start of last year. He was with the Barça squad during the second half of last season, helping the team finish second in La Liga.
Although the Catalans did not renew his contract in the summer, Alves remains grateful to the club for giving him a chance to play at the highest level of football.
“I am grateful to Rafa [Marquez] and all his technical staff for how they received me. Also to the president Joan (Laporta) who opened the doors for me there,” he added.
Dani Alves currently plies his trade for UNAM Pumas in the Mexican league. But that has not deterred him from playing a crucial role for Brazil in the World Cup, especially after the injury of Danilo.
One would expect the veteran to continue to be a key player for Selecao when they take on Croatia in the quarterfinal on Friday. Although he may not start, his leadership and experience could go a long way in helping the South Americans overcome the challenge of the 2018 World Cup finalists.
