It is increasingly looking like Sergino Dest’s future lies outside of Barcelona.
The 21-year-old joined the club only last year but things have not worked out for him at Camp Nou. While he was fairly regular in his debut season, the USMNT star did not exactly convince of his abilities, and things have hardly improved this time out.
Even before Xavi Hernandez’s arrival, Dest had seemingly lost the faith of ex-manager Ronald Koeman, with his situation getting even more difficult in the new regime.
Recent reports indicated that Xavi and the coaching staff were unhappy with Dest’s game and were planning to put him on a special tactical training regime to help get him up to speed. However, things seem to have changed a lot after Barça’s ouster from the UEFA Champions League.
The Catalans are planning a clearout over the upcoming two transfer windows, with Dest now listed among players for whom offers will be entertained. The development has piqued the interest of Bayern Munich, who are set to make a renewed attempt to land the former Ajax starlet, reports Gerard Romero.
The German champions were interested in the 21-year-old prior to his move to Barcelona in 2020 but were snubbed by the defender, who chose to move to Camp Nou due to the club’s sporting project.
Die Roten have continued to keep tabs on the USMNT right-back, though, and are believed to have made an offer of €45 million to sign him last summer, according to Romero. However, having tasted failure then, the Bavarian giants are now ready to relaunch a fresh attempt to sign Dest in January.
Earlier in the week, a different media outlet reported that Bayern Munich would move for Dest in the summer. However, if Romero’s claims are be believed, the Bundesliga bigwigs have decided to accelerate their pursuit of the Barcelona defender and try to sign him in January itself.
It remains to be seen if they do press ahead with their interest in the 21-year-old. But, as things stand, it does not look like Dest will be a Barcelona player for much longer.
