Speaking to Abendzeitung (h/t Fabrizio Romano), Bayern Munich director Hasan Salihamidzic has confirmed that the club intends to open contract talks with right-back Benjamin Pavard, who is a target for Barcelona.

Pavard has had a rough season at Bayern Munich as he had a brief falling out with former manager Julian Nagelsmann, at which point it looked like an exit would be certain, with the defender even losing his place in the starting XI.

However, things have changed in recent months, with Pavard regaining importance in the scheme of things at the Allianz Arena. And it seems like the French international might have a future under new manager Thomas Tuchel.

“We will discuss with Benjamin Pavard for a new contract — we will see his feelings to make a decision,” Salihamidzic said. “I’m happy he’s with us, he’s doing so well and the performances are very good,” he added.

Barcelona have held an interest in Pavard for quite some time now. There had been a brief period when things on the Pavard front had gone quiet, but recent reports suggest that they have not taken their eyes off the 27-year-old entirely.

The Frenchman’s contract expires in 2024, which makes him an appealing target as he could be available for a reasonable price when compared to Xavi’s preferred option, Juan Foyth, who has a €54 million release clause.

Should Pavard renew, though, it could work out in favour of Barcelona as another Bayern Munich right-back, Noussair Mazraoui, could be on the way out in that scenario.

The Moroccan is also very much on the radars of the Catalan giants and would reportedly be ‘delighted’ to move to Spotify Camp Nou.
