Over the past couple of days, Barcelona have been credited with an interest in Liverpool Montevideo’s Uruguayan midfielder Fabricio Diaz.

The 20-year-old defensive midfielder has been making all the right noises in South America, having already racked up over 100 appearances for his club despite his young age.

Diaz also starred for the Uruguayan national team at the South American U-20 Championship recently, which put him on the radars of several clubs across the globe.

According to Joaquim Piera of SPORT, Barcelona are interested in Diaz and the player himself is aware of the same. However, the Blaugrana are yet to make an offer for the young midfielder, who is valued at €6 million.

The Catalan giants could need a new midfielder who can succeed Sergio Busquets in the pivot position should the captain decide not to renew his contract.

Given the club’s financial situation, they will be on the lookout for cost-effective options which makes Diaz a good fit due to his €6 million valuation.

That, coupled with his age and potential, make him an attractive prospect for those at Camp Nou, although he would likely be brought in for the reserve team before being promoted to the senior setup.

However, while Barcelona are yet to make an offer for Diaz, the youngster is attracting serious interest from clubs in Brazil.

Indeed, both Flamengo and Palmeiras, the finalists of last season’s Copa Libertadores, are interested in signing the 20-year-old midfielder and would match his €6 million valuation while also offering him a respectable salary.

So, the ball now lies in Diaz’s court and it is up to him to decide whether he wishes to continue in South America by moving to Brazil or jump to Europe.

In case he opts for the latter, the chances of Barcelona signing him would increase, although they will have competition from the likes of Villarreal and Girona.
