Barcelona and Ronald Araujo are facing a dilemma over how to approach the defender’s recovery process after he picked up a nasty injury during the international break.

The broken right adductor could see the Uruguayan international subjected to the sidelines for a considerable period, meaning it is essential for the player and the club to come up with a comprehensive recovery plan.

Surgery is the ideal treatment method as it has proven to be safer in the past. However, with the 2022 FIFA World Cup just around the corner, the two parties are considering an alternative.

A recovery plan that does involve surgery could be much faster. But there are risks associated with it, as the player may not necessarily return to full fitness once the procedure is complete.

It has put Barcelona and Araujo in a state of uncertainty. But according to Gerard Romero, the Catalans are soon expected to come up with a decision, perhaps as early as today.

Reports suggest Barça ideally want to avoid surgery knowing it could see Araujo miss the better parts of the season. It could be a devastating blow for the Blaugrana, who have started the season extremely well and are in a position to rival Real Madrid for the league title.

Araujo, to that end, is an essential part of the club’s defensive setup. His aggression at the heart of the backline offers Barça some much-needed variety at the back, especially alongside technically-astute central defenders such as Andreas Christensen and Jules Kounde.

However, with Araujo and even Kounde picking up injuries early on in the international break, Barcelona may soon need to come up with alternatives. It will be equally important for the club to make the right decision when it comes to Araujo’s recovery process, so it will be interesting to see how things transpire over the next 24 hours.
