Sergio Busquets’ imminent departure at the end of the current season has forced Barcelona to a deeper look into the transfer market. For that, Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi is said to be topping the list.

The Catalans made some heavy investments in the transfer market during the summer. However, the team will have to analyse the current situation in order to make a new blueprint for the 2023-24 football season.

All that because while Busquets is still the owner of the pivot, he is being seduced by the idea of playing in the United States’ Major League Soccer (MLS). Now, Xavi would certainly want the veteran midfielder to continue, but even if he does, the solution will be temporary, to say the very least.

This is why Zubimendi is being watched upon. The Real Sociedad pivot is someone who Xavi likes, and as reported before, Barcelona have already made contacts with his agents in order to understand whether or not a move is feasible.

For now, it’s been established that Zubimendi’s ongoing deal with Sociedad runs until 2025, and if Barcelona want to acquire the 23-year-old, they will have to meet his release clause, which is worth €60 million.

As quoted by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, there is an intensive dialogue happening within the Barcelona management which involves Xavi, his coaching staff, Jordi Cruyff, Mateu Alemany and the technical secretariat.

The team wants to analyse the situation at hand mostly because Sociedad are said to be working on handing him a new deal. If agreed, Zubimendi will get a substantial pay rise, and his release clause will be doubled as well, which certainly won’t be ideal for Barcelona.

At the moment, Barcelona are of the opinion that Zubimendi is totally worth €60 million since he is an investment for the future. Furthermore, they also believe that the midfielder will not ask for a gigantic salary to come to Camp Nou in the first place.
