Enner Valencia made headlines for becoming the first player to score at the 2022 FIFA World Cup when he converted a spot kick against Qatar.

That was not his only good performance in the World Cup, as the former West Ham forward ended up netting three goals in the competition. While all of it went in vain as Ecuador were not able to go past the group stages, the forward raised quite a few eyebrows in Europe with his performances.

According to his agent, one of the clubs that took note of Valencia’s performances and subsequently enquired about him were FC Barcelona.

Speaking to Ecuadorian radio service Machdeportes, Gonzalo Vargas, the agent of Valencia, revealed (h/t Mundo Deportivo), “There was indeed an FC Barcelona poll .” He went on to reveal that the interest from Barça was, in fact, a matter of great pride for the player and his family.

The report suggests Barcelona showed interest in signing Valencia as a last-minute replacement for Memphis Depay, who joined Atletico Madrid on a permanent deal.

But the Catalans were unable to complete the transfer. They were ultimately content with the idea of not signing a replacement for Depay. As such, Enner Valencia ended up remaining at Fenerbahce.

The Ecuadorian international, who has scored 38 goals for his country, will continue to play for the Turkish giants until the end of the season before seeking a new adventure abroad.

His agent Vargas clarified that Valencia and his family were safe during the recent earthquake in Turkey that claimed the lives of more than 20,000 people. “They are in Istanbul, far from the area most affected by the earthquake,” he added.
