Barcelona watched Liverpool target in Champions League action, want him to replace Busquets

While bearing the fruits of their astute recruitment this season that has led Barcelona to current topping La Liga, the club’s sights are seemingly already set on next summer.

With the speculation suggesting that Sergio Busquets is set to depart Spotify Camp Nou after the end of the ongoing campaign, the Blaugrana have been linked with a successor for the legendary defensive midfielder.

For weeks on end, it seemed as if Martin Zubimendi had been earmarked as the ideal replacement for the World Cup winner.

However, it has been reported that the 23-year-old plans to sign a contract extension with Real Sociedad. As a result, it has been revealed that the club have shifted their attention to one of Europe’s most sought-after midfielders.

According to a report by SPORT, Barcelona’s scouts were present at the Parc des Princes to watch SL Benfica’s Enzo Fernandez in action during his side’s 1-1 draw against Paris Saint-Germain.

The Blaugrana had shown an interest in the midfielder in the past when Ramon Planes was the technical secretary. However, the club’s financial situation meant that a transfer was not pursued.

However, that could change next year as Enzo Fernandez is now viewed as a possible successor for Busquets.

Xavi’s side are understood to be admirers of the Argentine’s first touch, positioning and his ability to link play efficiently.

With the Portuguese powerhouse securing 80% of the 21-year-old’s transfer rights from River Plate by paying a €15 million fee earlier this year, it is mentioned that the club would be open to part ways with their in-demand talisman next summer.

Alongside Barça, the club that are claimed to be very interested in Fernandez’s potential arrival are Liverpool.

Crowned as the Man of the Match against PSG, the youngster certainly made an impression on those that sat to witness why he has been tipped as one of the most complete up-and-coming midfielders in the game.

Among those include Barcelona, whose interest may have gone through the roof after being in the presence of an Enzo Fernandez masterclass.
