Robert Lewandowski and Hansi Flick go back a long way, especially considering the success they enjoyed together at Bayern Munich.

The German tactician transformed the Polish striker into a bonafide goalscoring machine during his stint in Bavaria.

Lewandowski scored 41 goals and provided seven goals in the Bundesliga that year and would have rightfully taken home the Ballon d’Or if not for the pandemic.

Reunited with the manager under whom he saw his best version, many understandably see Lewandowski to be one of the biggest beneficiaries of Flick’s arrival.

For that, however, the player must first survive the upcoming summer transfer window.

Interest from the USA

It is clear at this point that very few players at Barcelona are safe and untouchable given the club’s financial and sporting situation.

At this point, any player who receives the right offer could well leave the club next month.

It is thus significant that LA Galaxy from the MLS are considering the signing of Robert Lewandowski this summer, as revealed by AS.

They place the Barcelona star as their top target and wish to pair him with Marco Reus whose move is all but sealed.

The Barcelona striker has insisted repeatedly that he wishes to honour his contract in Catalonia, but the right financial impetus and the chance to play with his former Borussia Dortmund teammate could change the situation.

In Flick’s plans

One of the main reasons Xavi was shown the exit door last month was not a lack of faith in Lewandowski, a player the management felt still had a lot to provide to the team.

While the legitimacy of the former manager’s stance is a topic for another day, Flick backs his former disciple and is convinced that he can bring out the best in him once more. After all, the 4-2-3-1 formation suits the Polish star well.

Lewandowski will thus serve as Barcelona’s first-choice striker next season and is expected to have a key role in the team, along with Ilkay Gundogan and Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

As such, a summer departure seems out of the question at this point.
