Gerard Pique has been in the headlines a fair bit recently. Whether it be about his controversial comments about referees, his trolling of Real Madrid or criticism of Bartomeu, he has been hogging the spotlight over the past few days. In the same interview with Ibai Llanos, the Barcelona centre-back also candidly spoke about many other topics. His retirement being one key aspect of the conversation.

The defender, who recently turned 34 has been sidelined since November due to a knee injury. Being one of the club’s senior-most players, Pique is one of the players who can’t be pictured wearing any other shirt other than the Claret and Blue. He opened up about the prospect of his retirement among other things while chatting with Ibai on Twitch.

“I will retire at Barça. I’ve always said that. I play football because I’m representing Barça. I don’t see myself on another team. I wouldn’t have the motivation, it would be a drama”, he affirmed.

The veteran has been undergoing conservative treatment since his injury against Atletico Madrid in La Liga. Giving an update on his recovery, he said: “I’m better than I expected. I need to be running for many hours yet as well as getting back to using the ball. I made the decision to take a conservative method to recovery, and it looks like it’s working really well.”

In Pique’s absence, youngster Ronald Araujo has made the step up to the first team as a starting centre-back. The Uruguayan has been a pillar at the back for the Blaugrana, with the Catalans being unbeaten in every game he has started for them. And Geri seemed to agree, as singing high praises of the 21-year-old.

“Araujo is a great centre-back, and will be for 10 or 15 years. He has everything. He is very young and has a very good head. Also, he is physically strong, fast and powerful, and has good ball control. La Masia is working very well and during his time in Segunda B with the youth team he matured, and now with the first team he has taken the opportunity. We need to help him to be the best player possible.” , said Pique.
