Barcelona still interested in Portugese youngster, player favours the move
It is no hidden secret that Atletico Madrid forward Joao Felix, who is currently on loan at Chelsea, has a lot of admirers at FC Barcelona.
President Joan Laporta has previously admitted to having tried to sign the Portuguese international as part of the deal that saw Antoine Griezmann join Atleti in 2021, but nothing came of it.
While there have been no new attempts made, Barcelona have continued to follow Felix from a distance, with reports suggesting that the Catalans continue to harbour hopes of signing him in the future.
Now, SPORT is reporting that Barcelona held talks with Atletico Madrid about Felix during the Memphis Depay negotiations to learn what the capital club’s intentions were with regard to the 23-year-old once his loan move at Chelsea expires.
It was nothing more than an enquiry, but goes on to indicate that the Blaugrana continue to hold an interest in the former SL Benfica wonderkid.
Before letting him join Chelsea earlier this month, Atletico Madrid extended his contract with the club until 2027. The 23-year-old is also shielded by a release clause worth €350 million.
However, the player, for his part, does not desire to continue at the Civitas Metropolitano after his loan spell at Chelsea, especially if Diego Simeone continues as manager. In that scenario, the Portuguese ace would look to secure an exit.
And, as per the report, Barcelona would be one of his favoured destinations.
The Catalans have a very good relationship with Felix’s agent, Jorge Mendes, who also represents the likes of Ansu Fati, Alejandro Balde and Nico Gonzalez.
Given Felix’s contract length and release clause amount, coupled with Barça’s financial situation, for any move to stand a chance of happening, it would likely involve some sort of player exchange and swap deals, and Mendes could help facilitate a move.
The report adds that he could form the frontline for Barcelona with Robert Lewandowski and Ousmane Dembele, if the club do end up signing him.
However, there is still plenty of time for the summer and a lot can change between now and then. So, only time will tell whether Barcelona are still interested in Felix and have the financial muscle to pull off a deal.
