Ever since winning the elusive treble in 2014/15, Barcelona have continually made a mockery of themselves on a European level. Juventus hammered the Catalan giants for three, then AS Roma were able to seamlessly comeback against them after losing the first leg 4-1. Liverpool mirror Roma’s performance, and if it was not enough, Bayern Munich absolutely demolished the club in 2019/20.
Despite it all, it seems Barcelona’s two league wins in the last five years seem to be enough for Barcelona to hold their own in UEFA’s Club Power Rankings, which puts Barça second only to Bayern Munich. The German capital-outfit have 129 points across the last five seasons, including 2020/21, while Barcelona have 121. This is in large part courtesy to the title win in 2018/19, which helped them accumulate 30 points — even higher than Liverpool’s 29 that season.
Real Madrid sit two adrift of Barcelona with 119 points, because after winning the Champions League in 2016/17 and 2017/18, the club fell massively in terms of wins across the next three seasons, despite winning the league last season. In fact, Madrid gathered 17 points in the 19/20 campaign, while Barça were able to win 24 points.
As it stands, though, Barcelona have won 19 points this season, level with Paris Saint-Germain. Manchester City and Bayern Munich sit on 22 each, while runaway leaders Atletico Madrid have only 16, two less than city-rivals Real Madrid.
Barcelona are down 4-1 in the Champions League to PSG after the first leg, 2-0 in the Copa Del Rey to Sevilla, and sit third in La Liga. It seems highly unlikely that the Blaugranas will be able to hold their runners-up spot in this table after the season calls curtains. The over-reliance on Lionel Messi must come to an end before Barcelona can make any moves upwards in the table.
