Barcelona set to offer a two-year contract to versatile defender

While players such as Hector Bellerin and Franck Kessie have had a relatively slow start to their Barcelona career, Marcos Alonso has been one of the players who has virtually taken no time to settle into the new surroundings.
A seasoned veteran, Alonso has been highly useful to Xavi Hernandez due to his versatility. Although a left-back by trade, the Barcelona coach has utilised his qualities at centre-back, especially in the absence of Andreas Christensen and Ronald Araujo due to injuries.
In light of Alonso’s utility, Barcelona are prepared to reward with him a fresh contract extension of up to two years, reports MARCA.
The Spanish publication claims that the Catalans are determined to keep hold of Alonso at all costs. They wanted to sign the former Chelsea star on a three-year contract initially, but Financial Fair Play regulations meant the player could only sign a one-year deal.
Nevertheless, with Alonso showcasing his true utility and experience at Barcelona, the club want to secure his future by handing him a two-year contract.
The new deal could come in the form of a direct two-contract. Alternatively, Barcelona could hand him a one-year contract, with the option to extend the deal by a further year. The latter could be a likely scenario as Barça look to keep their options open, as far as FFP regulations are concerned.
Alonso’s contract extension could go a long way in helping Barcelona secure the core of the defence, at least for the next couple of years. With Gerard Pique announcing his retirement and Jordi Alba’s future uncertain, the club require some experience in the defensive unit.
Alonso’s extension, to that end, could be a step in the right direction, as Barcelona continue their quest to strengthen the squad and restore lost glory.
