Barcelona picked up Memphis Depay on a free transfer in the summer of 2021 in what was considered to be one of the best deals at the time. The move did not quite work out for either party, though.

The Dutchman has a prominent role under Ronald Koeman, but pretty much lost his position under Xavi, starting as early as the January of 2022.

The Spanish coach brought in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ferran Torres that winter, both of whom took the starting role in the team almost immediately. This was further doubled down through the acquisition of Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski in the summer.

Now, Memphis is set to become a free agent in the summer of 2023, but Barcelona are hoping to sell him this January to raise money through player sales. Atletico Madrid are said to be one of the parties interested in the transfer.

However, it seems Atleti are not particularly interested in handing cash to Barcelona. Gerard Romero has reported that the Colchoneros proposed a player-for-player swap involving Thomas Lemar and Memphis, but the offer was rejected by Joan Laporta and co.

Lemar, much like Memphis, is set to become a free agent in the summer, which is why he was involved offered in the exchange.

However, Barcelona are in no rush to sell Memphis. They only want cash for him, and are ready to wait for a better offer.
