Barcelona rejected chance to sign ex-striker last summer as they felt another No. 9 was not needed

Barcelona are still reeling from the 2-4 defeat they suffered at the hands of Girona last night in the Catalan derby.

It was an underwhelming display from the reigning champions of La Liga, characterised by the lack of cutting edge and clinical nature in the final third of the pitch.

Indeed, Barça had a total of 31 shots on the night and boasted a superior xG of over 4, but could only score two goals.

Robert Lewandowski may have scored the opening goal for Barcelona, but was rather disappointing for most of the game, even missing a gilt-edged chance in stoppage time.

But the lack of a natural alternative in the centre-forward position meant that Xavi does not really have any other option but to stick with the Pole for the full 90 minutes game after game.

Barcelona could have signed Aubameyang

Amidst this, SPORT is now reporting that Barcelona had a great opportunity to address this problem by bringing back a familiar face in the summer.

Indeed, as per the report, Barcelona could have signed former striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in the summer window on a free transfer.

The Gabonese centre-forward, who spent six months at Barça in 2022, was a free agent after his Chelsea contract ran down and offered himself to the La Liga champions.

However, the report states that Barcelona deemed that another No. 9 was not needed in the team and passed up on the chance to bring Aubameyang back.

The former Arsenal captain ended up signing for Marseille instead, where he is thriving, racking up 12 goals and six assists in 21 games.

Aubameyang is a player Barcelona know well as he played a key role in his short six-month stint at the club before he was offloaded to Chelsea.

But, the Catalans were not ready to take another punt on him in the summer and instead decided to bet on the future with the signing of Vitor Roque.

However, FFP issues meant that the 18-year-old would not arrive until 2024, with the Blaugrana now eagerly waiting for the young striker to join his teammates in January.
