Barcelona midfielder Pedri will have several reasons to enter the field against Rayo Vallecano today with a keen eye for a win.
For once, he turns 21 today and second, he would want to dedicate the victory to his close friend Gavi, whose season is over after tearing his ACL, reports Mundo Deportivo.
This time last year, the midfielder was with the Spanish national team as he prepared for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
Fast forward to this date and a lot has happened with the midfielder, including a lengthy recovery from a significant injury that kept him on the sidelines for two and a half months.
Pedri’s tribute to Gavi
Pedri is said to be determined to secure a win against Rayo Vallecano despite the fact that Barcelona have not beaten them in each of their last four outings. The 21-year-old is not only aiming for personal success but also to uplift his friend Gavi.
“I send him a lot of encouragement. I know that these are very difficult times for him. I have had several injuries and I know that when you are injured you value being healthy a lot. We will all help him,” he said about Gavi a few days back.
Saturday’s game against Vallecano will mark his second consecutive start in the ongoing season.
Hindered by muscle issues, the midfielder saw action in only two games before his injury, facing off against Getafe and Cadiz. In the upcoming match, he is set to start in the midfield alongside Ilkay Gundogan and potentially Fermin Lopez and Oriol Romeu.
At the same time, it must also be remembered that Frenkie de Jong is fit and available for selection, as mentioned by Xavi, but he is only expected to play about 25-30 minutes just to achieve proper match fitness ahead of the gruelling schedule.
