As per Joaquim Piera of SPORT, Barcelona have been knocked out of the race for Gabriel Moscardo, the 18-year-old Corinthians midfielder who is one of the great revelations of the year in Brazil and South America.

PSG have everything in their favour to finalise the signing of the defensive midfielder, who looks very promising and can play regularly for the Brazilian national team, in the next few hours.

Deco was keen on the deal

Deco tried to block the Corinthians player even before he was officially appointed sporting director of Barça. At that time, Moscardo was in the U-20 team of the Corinthians, but he did not succeed.

During recent months, as the top executive of the Blaugrana’s football department, he continued with his contacts, as has been reported on a regular basis. His approach to negotiations, however, has ended up leading to a dead end.

Barcelona were attempting to make the most of Chelsea’s indecision in pursuit of Moscardo, but it is PSG that appear to have won the race for the 18-year-old midfield prodigy.

PSG close to deal

PSG had been monitoring Moscardo for the last few months with sporting director, Luis Campos, convincing the club owners and management internally to make a move. The executive has travelled to Sao Paulo to finalise the signing.

There is already a salary agreement between the player, who is looking forward to the option of moving to Europe, and the French club.

The next step, which could be finalised this week, is to determine the transfer price. Negotiations are already underway between the two clubs. The value of the sale will be around €25 million.

PSG have a plan in place for Moscardo’s development, with the youngster expected to remain with Corinthians until the middle of the next year.

As such, Barcelona appear to have lost one of the options they were considering to reinforce a position as critical as that of pivot midfield, where, in the current squad, there is only one specialist: Oriol Romeu.
