Ever since leaving La Masia, Xavi Simons has long been linked with a return to Barcelona. The speculations have fueled now more than ever, especially after Simons’ stellar loan spell at RB Leipzig.

Although Simons is all set to return to Paris Saint-Germain, his future in the French capital is far from secure, with a series of clubs, including Barcelona and Bayern Munich, interested in his services.

Barcelona on the verge of giving up

However, in a massive blow for FC Barcelona, it appears the Catalans are on the verge of giving up in the race to sign Xavi Simons this summer.

According to Diario SPORT, Barça are fast falling behind Bayern in the pursuit of the Dutch international and are seemingly unable to compete with the Bavarians’ strong desire to sign the player.

Simons, for his part, had always harboured the hopes of returning to Barcelona. But his dreams could soon ebb away, as Barcelona struggle to compete with Bayern.

The German giants, fresh from appointing Vincent Kompany as the new coach, are ready for a makeover this summer. To that end, the club are keen on reinforcing their ranks in the offensive unit, with Simons emerging as an ideal target.

Curiously, Barcelona have been linked with a move for Kingsley Coman. Bayern, for their part, appear willing to sell the Frenchman as part of their plans to reshuffle the attacking unit.

Coman’s salary, though, could be a problem for Barcelona as the Frenchman reportedly earns a hefty salary of €15 million at Bayern.

Nevertheless, Barcelona appear to be on the verge of bowing out of the race to sign Simons. After consultations with Deco, coach Hansi Flick has decided to look at other weak areas in the squad, rather than dumping the limited resources on the PSG star.
