Barcelona-linked winger could be Manchester United’s new ‘number 1 target’

Barcelona are likely to miss out on Ajax’s 22-year-old winger Antony, with a report from The Telegraph, relayed by Mundo Deportivo, saying Manchester United could well and truly rope in the Brazil winger if Erik ten Hag is named as their new manager.

Ten Hag, considered one of the favourites to land the United job, has worked with a number of top talents in Ajax, but Antony is someone who he wants to bring in at Old Trafford.

Like Barcelona, Manchester United are on the lookout for a new forward since the likes of Edinson Cavani, and Anthony Martial face uncertain futures.

Add in Marcus Rashford to the list, and the team would effectively be left with Cristiano Ronaldo, Anthony Elanga and Jadon Sancho as their only frontmen.

And so, if ten Hag arrives, he wouldn’t be the only one travelling from Amsterdam to Manchester. Sitting on his adjoining seat would be Antony, who has also attracted interest from Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Barcelona.

For Barcelona, their interest in the 22-year-old does not really strike as any surprise since they are struggling to reach an agreement with Ousmane Dembele.

The Frenchman, who is said to be more inclined to stay than leave, is key to every decision that the team management will make in the summer.

If Dembele and his entourages fail to reach an agreement by summer, Barcelona will have to dive deep into the market, and while their primary choice would be Raphinha, Leeds United staying in the Premier League would complicate matters for everyone involved.

In case the Frenchman stays, any thought of Raphinha to Barcelona would be dropped altogether and the team will then try to keep Adama Traore for another season.

As for Antony, one can expect Barcelona to keep him as their last resort since Raphinha has earned quite a few admirers within the Camp Nou premises.
