Recent developments at Barcelona have indicated a growing rift between Joan Laporta and coach Xavi Hernandez after his blunt sentiments did not sit comfortably with the board.

This has given rise to Laporta getting some heat online, as Barça would be parting ways with the coach shortly after confirming his continuity.

However, Barcelona’s former legendary centre-back Gerard Pique has come out in Laporta’s defence, shedding light on the difficult responsibilities he endures on the hot seat.

Laporta has Pique’s trust

Indeed, the 37-year-old argued that Laporta has warranted more time and that results are not everything in the world of football.

“Laporta is considered the best president in the history of the club by many.”

“Results are not everything. Members are lucky to be able to vote for the president. I would give him time until his term ends. We must be responsible for what we vote for,” Pique stated via Jijantes FC.

Laporta took over as Barcelona’s president for the second time in 2021 and will sit at the helm until 2026.

Even though there has been some chatter about a no-confidence vote being put into action, Pique is clearly Team Laporta for now.

Players must adapt

Furthermore, Pique confessed that in a fast-moving environment like Barcelona’s, things are always changing and the players must adapt.

With talk of Xavi Hernandez being forced to hit the exit door this summer, Pique said the players will eventually adapt and aim to win over the new coach.

“The players know that they are in a club where things can change, and if the coach changes, they will adapt and have the hope of wanting to like the new coach,” he said.

It remains to be seen who Barcelona recruits as Xavi’s potential successor, but the likes of Hansi Flick, Thomas Tuchel and Rafa Marquez stand a strong chance.
