Barcelona were rocked by the recent 4-2 defeat at the hands of local rivals Girona. It was a shocking result that has put heaps of pressure on Xavi Hernandez.

Shortly after the defeat, speculation erupted, suggesting an uproar within the Barcelona dressing room, with players now starting to question Xavi.

The Barcelona coach has received criticism from a section of supporters as well, especially in light of the club’s poor form in the league.

Gerard Pique backs Xavi Hernandez

In a recent interview, Gerard Pique has opened up on Xavi. The former Barcelona defender and club legend has backed the Barça coach in spite of the recent results.

“I still think the same as I said 15 days ago. Xavi is the best possible coach,” said Pique, as quoted by SPORT.

On whether Barcelona are still under construction like Xavi says, Pique added: “You have to believe in what the coach says, you have to listen to him.”

It must be noted that Pique has played with Xavi during his career. He also played under the former midfielder for a good year, before retiring from professional football.

Pique on the Girona defeat

Apart from backing Xavi, Gerard Pique also commented on Barcelona’s humiliating 4-2 defeat at the hands of Girona.

The Spaniard suggested that such defeats are only part and parcel of the game and fans remain patient. He did, however, admit that the defeat to Girona was a painful one.

“The defeat against Girona was painful, it’s normal for them to be upset. But we know that patience is difficult in all projects in life,” Pique said.

Barcelona, though, will have a chance to redeem themselves as they take on Royal Antwerp in the final Champions League group stage game tomorrow.

With qualification already sealed, it will be a chance for Xavi to do some experimentation as he looks to get his team back on track.
