FC Barcelona will soon announce Hansi Flick as their new manager, with the German all set to succeed Xavi Hernandez at the helm of affairs.

As was the case under the Spaniard, the former Bayern Munich manager will also prioritise the signing of a new pivot midfielder, with Joshua Kimmich seen as a key target.

After all, Flick knows the midfielder very well, having coached him both with Bayern Munich and the German national team.

Kimmich is seen as an appealing target as his contract at Bayern Munich expires in the summer of 2025 and a renewal is yet to be agreed.

Bayern Munich are Kimmich’s first priority

However, according to journalist Maximilian Koch, Kimmich sees Bayern Munich as his first point of contact, giving them the first preference.

The 29-year-old midfielder is very much appreciated by Hansi Flick, but a move to Barcelona is not exactly ‘hot’ at this moment.

Apart from Barça, several other clubs are interested in the German international at this point, but there is nothing concrete for now.

As far as the contract situation is concerned, there have not been any concrete negotiations between Kimmich and Bayern either.

But the German ace seems to be leaning towards the Bavarians before considering the possibility of an exit.

Wages could be an issue for Barcelona

Furthermore, as reported earlier today, wages could also become an issue for Barcelona in their pursuit of Kimmich.

Indeed, the midfielder wants around €19.5 million per year salary before taxes, something that the Catalans are in no position to match owing to their financial situation and the need to cut down on the wage bill.

So, it remains to be seen whether Barça are indeed capable of signing Kimmich or if he ends up renewing with Bayern Munich.
