Even though it has been only two months since the summer transfer window slammed shut, Barcelona are already drawing up plans for the summer of next year.
Indeed, reports suggest that the Catalans have identified several areas in the squad that need strengthening and given that funds will likely be hard to come by during the winter, the plan is to go for reinforcements in the summer window.
A new defensive midfielder and two new full-backs are understood to be on the agenda for Barcelona for 2024 and possible targets for the same have also been identified.
Jorginho, Thiago on the agenda
ESPN’s Sam Marsden and Moi Llorens are now reporting that Barcelona have their sights set on Arsenal midfielder Jorginho and Liverpool veteran Thiago Alcantara as possible targets to strengthen the defensive midfield area next year.
Jorginho is a player that has been on Barcelona’s agenda for a while now. The Italian international is an experienced individual and comes with a proven pedigree at the highest level, having tasted success with Chelsea and Italy.
The midfielder joined Arsenal earlier this year in January and has seen his game-time take a hit at the Emirates. And with his contract expiring at the end of the season, he could be up for grabs for free.
Meanwhile, Thiago is a player Barcelona know very well. A product of the La Masia youth setup, the midfielder made 100 appearances for the first team before joining Bayern Munich where he enjoyed great success.
Thiago’s time at Liverpool has been riddled with injuries and he had been linked with a move back to Barcelona in the summer but nothing materialised.
Now, though, with his contract expiring next year, he is being seen as an option for the pivot position.
Other options on the agenda
Apart from Jorginho and Thiago, Barcelona are also understood to be keeping tabs on Real Betis’ Guido Rodriguez, another potential free agent for next year.
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich mainstay Joshua Kimmich also remains on the agenda while some young talents like Arthur Vermeeren, Gabriel Moscardo, and Sergi Altimira are also being looked at.
