It has been almost three months since Jeremie Frimpong was last linked with Barcelona. However, if what Carlos Monfort is reporting is true, the team from Catalonia has decided to rekindle their interest in the Bayern Leverkusen youngster.

In fact, the journalist writes that there was contact between the player’s representatives and Deco, who considers Frimpong as Barcelona quality. However, despite the interest, Joao Cancelo remains the Blaugrana’s priority this summer.

But if the operation to sign the Portuguese fall through, Barcelona have been made aware of the fact that Leverkusen could let Frimpong go for just €30 million.

Frimpong an exciting talent

Since joining Bayer Leverkusen from Celtic in 2021, Frimpong has made rapid strides during his time in Germany.

The former Manchester City starlet scored nine goals and set up 11 more from 48 matches during the 2022/23 campaign, thriving as a wing-back in Xabi Alonso’s team.

It sparked Barcelona’s interest in the Netherlands international, but things had gone quiet after it had emerged that a move to Manchester United might be close for him.

But since that has not materialised, Frimpong could again be an option for Barça, although Cancelo remains the priority.

We have reported before that Barcelona have already made advancements in their attempt to sign Cancelo from Manchester City. The deal is said to be a one-year loan tenure with a mandatory purchase option for €70 million.

Personal terms are not going to be a problem in this operation as the full-back has already agreed to everything.

As far as City are concerned, they recently left Cancelo out of their matchday squad for their Community Shield game against Arsenal, further escalating the fact that he could be on his way out.

What are the other alternatives?

Jeremie Frimpong happens to be one of the many alternatives of Cancelo for Barcelona. It is believed that apart from the City full-back, the Blaugrana are also considering the likes of Ivan Fresneda and even Juan Foyth.

The team, however, appears to be quite divided about Fresneda as he is still an unproven equity and Xavi only wants a proven veteran for the right-back role.

Now, Foyth is considered to be a solid option but any operation to acquire the Argentina international could go right up to €55 million.

At €30 million, Frimpong could be a good alternative but it has been established that Barcelona are looking for a more defensively inclined right-back and this is where the Leverkusen full-back does not fit.
