Barcelona defender Eric Garcia understands that he has the full trust of Spain manager Luis Enrique despite the strong competition in the squad. Regardless of that, however, it goes without saying that his participation in the national team is still primarily linked with his performances for the Blaugrana.
For that, Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo has written that the former Manchester City centre-half worked thoroughly to reach the maximum physical level. In turn, his teammates at Barcelona were surprised to see the transformation.
All that was made possible by the intense regime he followed during his vacation, something he could not do earlier due to the physical overload after playing uninterruptedly.
The initial plan for the 21-year-old was to undergo the transformation last year itself, but the objective was delayed due to his presence in the European Championships and the Olympic Games.
This year, however, Garcia took full advantage of the time at hand by gaining an excessive muscle mass. This was done by spending hours in the gym and following a strict regime, sometimes even doing double sessions in one day.
The intention of building muscle mass in order to gain extra strength was eventually achieved which left the Barcelona locker room truly baffled. As MD reports, the main idea behind all this was to adapt to the growing physical nature of the sport without losing agility and speed.
As of today, the 21-year-old is now bearing the fruits of the hard work, with Enrique branding him as a ‘wonderful player’. Moreover, even Xavi has nothing but admiration for the youngster to an extent that he hinted, “he [Garcia] could be captain at 21 years old”.
Once a skinny 5ft 9in rookie, Garcia is now simply untouchable in the club and the national team. Even in Barcelona, he started each of his side’s first four league games while completing full 90 minutes in three of them, before picking up a minor niggle.
Now with the international matches coming up, Garcia will hope to get more minutes in the tank in order to return to Barcelona in a good moment.
