Barcelona defender not considering leaving in January, wants to renew his contract for next season

After failing to sign Vitor Roque during the summer transfer window, Barcelona had to settle for his arrival in January, 2024. However, several reports have suggested that the Catalans will run into FFP trouble while registering him.

They might have to reduce their wage bill further during the January window if they want to complete his signing.

Talks to reduce the salaries of some players, such as Frenkie de Jong and Marc-Andre ter Stegen are already underway, while others could be offloaded in an attempt to release wages and/or bring in revenue through player sales.

One of the players who was rumored to not be a part of Xavi’s plans next season is Marcos Alonso. However, according to a report by SPORT, the Spaniard is not thinking about leaving Barcelona in January.

Contract extension on the cards

Alonso’s contract with Barça comes to a close in the summer of 2024, but the player wants to extend beyond June and wants to be in Catalonia next season.

Barcelona have not ruled out extending his contract, either, provided that he reduces his wages to match the new salary scale, which will help the club adhere to the FFP rules and register players.

The player already made an economic sacrifice when signing for the Catalans in the summer of 2022, and is looking to make an impact on the team.

He was an important part of the team last season as Xavi trusted him over Eric Garcia as a centre-back, and even as a left-back against top teams such as Bayern Munich.

However, after Alejandro Balde’s integration into the team as a starting left-back and the signing of Inigo Martinez, Alonso has played just four games this season so far.

Alonso could get his chance soon

Barcelona have run into severe injury trouble this season, and more recently in defence, with Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde both picking up muscle problems.

Alonso could, therefore, soon get his chance in the team with a flurry of important fixtures coming the team’s way.

While Joao Cancelo is more than comfortable playing as a left-back, as well, Xavi could opt to rotate the Portuguese, who has played several games this season already.
