A common strategy that Barcelona have taken advantage of in the coming transfer window is to seek players whose contracts are either months or a year from ending and then pounce on them.
Barça have sought out two Chelsea defenders this season, in Cezar Azpilicueta and Andreas Christensen. They also want to reinforce the midfield with Franck Kessie and the attack with Robert Lewandowski.
Recent reports from SPORT state that Barcelona’s opportunism has led them to Kalidou Koulibaly. The Senegalese international’s contract will end in the summer of 2023, and Napoli want to make money on him before it runs out.
To cut costs, as he is reported to be worth €30 million, Barça want to include players in the deal. SPORT did not give any hints as to who is on the list of possible players involved in the swap.
One can, however, assume that Sergino Dest is one of them, as he has already been listed once with regards to Jules Kounde.
Koulibaly has no desire to extend his contract with the Italian giants and is looking for a change of scenery, and Barça seem a likely target.
Barcelona’s defence next season is shaping up to be quite impressive. Gerard Pique is having one of the best individual campaigns in his career, Azpilicueta is immensely experienced, and so is Koulibaly.
Both the potential signings still have their best years ahead and could make Barcelona quite the defensive force next season. The team will also have a young defensive base, as the likes of Eric Garcia and Christensen will be there next season, led by Ronald Araujo.
