Barcelona’s upsurge in form over the past couple of months largely boils down to the defensive solidity they have established.

Pau Cubarsi has been one of the primary contributors to the Catalans’ newfound security in defence, as the centre-back has hardly put a foot wrong since becoming a mainstay in the starting XI.

Despite starting a game of such high stature in hostile territory, the 17-year-old never looked out of place in the UEFA Champions League quarter-final against PSG.

The 17-year-old nullified any threat the Parisian forwards carried and calmly played out the hosts’ pressure with astute distributive abilities.

Owing to the significant progress Cubarsi has achieved, Barcelona recognizes they cannot let a player as talented as him slip out of their clutches.

Renewal on track

It was previously reported that Barcelona have offered Cubarsi a short-term contract renewal due to his status as a minor, which prevents him from signing a long-term professional contract until he turns 18.

Now, as per Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona and Pau Cubarsi’s team are in the midst of negotiations to finalize the player’s contract extension, as both parties aim to achieve a resolution shortly.

Despite crucial details yet to be ironed out, Barcelona fans can take a sigh of relief knowing Cubarsi intends to stay with his boyhood club for a very long time.

In fact, the report argues that there is a chance that a deal can be made before the season is fully concluded.

Barcelona set to tie down Yamal and Cubarsi

A few weeks ago, sporting director Deco confirmed to the press that Barcelona are intent on securing the continuity of both Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi.

“We’ve everything on track for Lamine Yamal’s future. It’s the same planning with Pau Cubarsi,” he declared.

Considering the pair’s importance to the Catalan outfit, it is expected that the hierarchy will place great emphasis on tying them down to the club.
