In a positive development, FC Barcelona are close to tying down midfield prodigy Marc Bernal to a new contract at the club, reports MARCA.

Bernal, who turned 17 this Sunday, is seen as one of the most exciting young talents coming through the ranks at La Masia.

The young midfielder enjoyed a breakthrough campaign with Barça Atletic this season and has been tipped to take over the pivot midfield role in the first-team setup in the future.

Naturally, the Blaugrana were eager to get his contract renewed and secure his future at the club, which they are now close to doing.

New deal until 2027

Considering that Bernal is still not 18 years old, he is ineligible to sign a long-term contract with Barcelona.

As such, the Blaugrana will be handing him a three-year deal until 2027, which is the common practice at the club for underage players, with an option for an additional two years.

Bernal’s explosion with Barça Atletic saw him make 27 league appearances this season in which he even contributed with two goals and three assists.

Naturally, his progression has caught the attention of teams in the Spanish First Division as well as clubs from abroad.

But the youngster has always wanted to succeed at Barça and is now close to committing to a new deal, in hope of breaking into the senior setup soon.

Bernal’s pre-season under Hansi Flick

The report further states that as things stand, Bernal will be doing the pre-season with the senior team under new Barcelona manager Hansi Flick this summer.

Even though the German tactician is yet to be officially announced as the next manager, all signs point towards him replacing Xavi at the helm.

And, the 59-year-old is likely to give opportunities to talents from the academy to prove themselves during pre-season.

Bernal, for one, will be aiming to capitalise on that and make an impression on the new first-team boss once he arrives.
