As per the latest news coming in from RAC1, the meeting scheduled for today between the management committee and the presidential candidates has been called off. Interim president Carles Tusquets had scheduled the meeting to discuss sporting issues. Eric Garcia’s signing was likely the main agenda of the meeting.

However, the meeting has been cancelled last minute and Eric Garcia is definitely off the table in the January window. With deadline day approaching on Monday, Barcelona will most likely be unable to complete the deal in time. However, the stringent budget due to the current financial crisis at the club is also a big factor.

Barcelona have been in pursuit of the Manchester City center-back since last summer. The former La Masia defender is also highly keen on rejoining his boyhood club. Garcia, according to Mundo Deportivo will not listen to any other offers except Barça’s. His signing, however, seems to have divided opinions among fans and two of the favourite presidential candidates.

Joan Laporta remained firm on his stance that Barcelona should not pay to bring Garcia if he is available for free in June. Victor Font, however, believes that signing the youngster will be key in the club’s pursuit for silverware this season.

In the face of tremendous short term liability, Barcelona’s finances will not allow to pay for Eric Garcia’s immediate transfer. It is all but guaranteed that he will arrive in the summer after his contract expires. His decision will be clearer, following the presidential elections which are scheduled for 7th of March.
