Barcelona believe they can register teenage prodigy’s contract following Depay’s sale

As Memphis Depay’s move to Atletico Madrid from Barcelona inches towards completion, the Catalans are already planning their next moves.
The Dutchman’s impending move to Atletico will free up some space on the wage bill while also bring in some revenue, with the Rojiblancos set to pay a fee of around €3-4 million for the forward’s services.
And, Barcelona are already looking at potential replacements for Depay at manager Xavi Hernandez’s behest.
At the same time, journalist Adria Albets is reporting that the Blaugrana believe there will be enough room for the club to register the new contract of midfield prodigy Gavi.
The 18-year-old Golden Boy 2022 Award winner signed a new contract with Barcelona in September last year. Gavi’s new deal with the club runs until the summer of 2026.
However, the extension has not been registered with La Liga, which has meant that the midfield prodigy is still considered a subsidiary player.
It has prohibited the club from giving Gavi the No. 6 kit as they have intended to. Given the club’s Financial Fair Play problems, president Joan Laporta claimed that the teenager’s contract registration might have to wait until the summer.
But, now, as per the aforementioned report, Barcelona now believe that there could be enough room for them to register Gavi’s new deal as well as bring in a low-cost replacement for Depay before the January transfer window closes.
If so, it will come as a major boost for Gavi and Barcelona. The 18-year-old has grown into a vital player for the club and was the star of the show in their recent Spanish Super Cup final triumph against Real Madrid.
Apart from Gavi, Barça are also yet to register Ronald Araujo’s new contract while the club are also hoping to renew Alejandro Balde and Inaki Pena at the earliest possible too. Whether all those operations will be possible before the end of the month remains to be seen.
