It is a summer of change at FC Barcelona as they begin a new chapter under manager Hansi Flick after getting rid of club legend Xavi Hernandez earlier this month.

The German tactician is likely to make several changes to way things are done at the club while there may be some alterations made to the squad as well, keeping in mind the Catalans’ financial situation.

As such, there are a number of Barça players staring at uncertain futures heading into the summer, one of whom happens to be captain Sergi Roberto.

The versatile midfielder’s renewal seemed guaranteed when Xavi was in charge, but things have changed after Flick’s appointment. Furthermore, the Catalans’ FFP issues mean that there is no guarantee about Roberto’s registration even if he is renewed.

Marc Casado to replace Roberto?

Amidst this, Mundo Deportivo reports that there are several voices at Barcelona who believe that La Masia midfielder Marc Casado should replace Sergi Roberto in the first-team squad next season.

Casado, 20, currently serves as the captain of Barça Atletic but is being primed for an important role in Hansi Flick’s setup next season. In fact, the midfielder is close to finalising a contract renewal until 2027.

Those within Barcelona believe that the young Casado can replace Roberto in the squad, providing extra physical strength, youth and ambition for less money.

Casado has been fundamental for Rafa Márquez’s Barça Atletic team this season. The youngster has played both in midfield and at right-back and has started 28 times in the First RFEF.

At the same time, Casado also made two appearances in La Liga after having been called up for 21 games.

Given that Roberto’s renewal is no longer seen as a priority and depends on several conditions, there are voices at the club who believe that the timing might be right to trust Casado with greater responsibilities and bid adieu to Roberto.
