Former Barcelona player and executive Eric Abidal explained in an interview with the Telegraph how the club’s ex-president Josep Maria Bartomeu rejected the chance to solve their financial crisis back in 2019.

The French admitted having introduced a company to the club which could have invested a lot of money to sanitize the club’s complex financial situation.

Supposedly this contact between the company and the club was made around two years ago when the crisis started. The problem has been getting worse since that day and Barça are facing one of the most critical and crucial moments of their history.

Bad management of the club worsened with a global pandemic that we all know about, which has been extremely harmful to the football industry and has resulted in a big crisis that remains to be the biggest nightmare for the club’s new president Joan Laporta and his board.

According to Abidal, Bartomeu and his board rejected this option because they did not want to expose themselves, as they were not completing their job efficiently.

“I think it was possible to resolve the financial situation. It was not easy because it was huge, huge amounts of money and at this time Barcelona was protecting all the information about the accounts. (…) I understand that maybe you are ashamed to show to the people, big people, that you are not managing the club well.”, concluded Abidal.

Although it remains uncertain if this big quantity of money would have been beneficial or not for the Catalan club, it is true that Barcelona urgently need to reduce their short time debt for this Summer, which elevates to more than €700 million.

Abidal played 125 games for Barça from 2007 to 2013. He retired back in 2014. Later on, he joined the executive board of the Catalan club at the start of the 2018-19 season. After multiple disagreements with president Josep Maria Bartomeu and their board, he was sacked in August 2020, completing a short but intense era at the Camp Nou offices.
